Having principles is important, but if they are not put into practice, they are only nice ideas. Our founder is a part of what we do on every job. He is not just a face or mascot for the company; he is involved in every project in Asheville, North Carolina and works through the whole process with our clients. We are also upfront about the cost of the project, meaning we won’t lowball the estimate just to get the job and spring surprise costs on you at the end.

Marvin Spruill

Marvin Spruill is an exceptional individual who has made a significant impact in his community through his commitment to service and entrepreneurship. Born and raised in Hampstead, North Carolina, Marvin was inspired by his grandfather’s legacy of service and hard work from a young age. He spent his formative years learning valuable life lessons working alongside his grandfather in the family business and volunteering with the local fire department.
Marvin’s desire to serve his country led him to join the US Army at the age of 17, where he pursued a career in aviation. During his time in the military, he was commended for his service and dedication to helping troubled inner-city youth through various military programs. However, Marvin realized that he missed the fire service and decided to pursue a full-time career as a firefighter.
Marvin’s fire service career spanned 20 years with three different departments, during which he was promoted through the ranks and became a member and instructor for North Carolina’s Urban Search & Rescue Team. Additionally, he taught vehicle extrication through the college system and obtained his degree in business management. Marvin’s experiences in the fire department taught him the importance of teamwork, leadership, and community involvement.
As a firefighter, Marvin had his own side business in construction. However, he became frustrated with the industry’s lack of core values and decided to start his own construction company, Off Duty Fireman Construction Inc, in 2000. Marvin wanted to build a company that represented the core values and code he lived by, including communication, accountability, honor, duty, attention to detail, loyalty, and a second-to-none work ethic.

Off Duty Fireman Construction obtained its Commercial & Residential Building license in 2004 and has continued to grow and diversify in the construction industry. The company stays on the cutting edge of technology to provide clients with a second-to-none experience. Marvin is proud to be a member of the Smokey Mountain Home Builders Association, Asheville Home Builders Association, and National Association of Home Builders.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Marvin is passionate about giving back to the community. He works with Wounded Warriors, NC Chapel Hill Jaycee Burn Center for Children, 9-11 Memorial and has implemented an in-house giving back initiative at Off Duty Fireman Construction. In his free time, Marvin enjoys spending time with his wife, traveling, and golfing. He also has two adult children pursuing college degrees in criminal justice and business.
Overall, Marvin Spruill is a remarkable individual who has made a positive impact on his community through his dedication to service, entrepreneurship, and giving back.
